Southern Iowa Plumbing

About Us

John Buttz, current owner and operator of Southern Iowa Plumbing, LLC., began his career in the little town of Millerton, Iowa. Fall of 1993, during his freshman year of high school, he went to work for Fry Company where he was mentored by Troy Atcheson and Richard Mason. John learned numerous trade skills while working at Fry Company, such as small engine repair, HVAC, plumbing, hydraulic hose repair and baler belts, electrical, electric motors and overhauling well pumps to name a few.

Summertime throughout his high school career was spent in Olathe, Kansas, where his uncle Alan owned and operated Atcheson Plumbing Company. After graduating from Wayne Community High School in 1995, he packed up and moved to Olathe where he began his full-time employment with Atcheson Plumbing Company. John spent 8 months there, working in the new construction field, installing plumbing for new homes as well as doing remodels. While he valued the trade, his heart remained in southern Iowa, and he was more than ready to come home. Upon his return home, he was employed by Clayton Plumbing & Heating and worked for Lee and Keo Holmes at Holmes Tiling for a while.

One Sunday, he came across an ad in the Sunday paper hiring apprentices at Cook Plumbing in West Des Moines, Iowa. John decided to jump on that opportunity and remained at Cook Plumbing for 21 years. John worked his way through Cook Plumbing from the bottom up. He began doing new sewer, water and storm installs for homes. Once those skills were mastered, he moved on to doing plumbing, radiant heat, custom tile shower systems, septic systems, drain cleaning and even big commercial projects. John was instrumental in plumbing numerous commercial projects in West Des Moines such as Carlo’s O Kellys, Carmike Movie Theatre, Perkins, and Country Inn & Suites Hotel. Mark Cook, owner of Cook Plumbing, worked him through every aspect of the business prior to bringing him inside to teach him the dynamics of business operations and would put John in charge of the residential plumbing department where John was responsible for overseeing 75 guys and their daily tasks. Managing the residential side, John was always responsible for the projects going where these 75 guys were working, providing them with plans to carry out as well as ensuring they had everything needed to get their jobs completed.

While employed for Cook Plumbing, John attended college of ABC of Iowa from 1998-2001 where he would attain his Journeyman’s license after a year of employment, and then his Master’s degree after 3 years of employment. After completing college, he remained there as an instructor for 3 years and sat on the Board of Directors there for 4 years. During John’s time at ABC of Iowa, he was asked to judge the Craft Championship where the best of the best competed and would be chosen to go on to compete at a national level. John served on the Waukee Board of Adjustments for 15 years where he resided.

In December of 2013, John came back to southern Iowa to be closer to family and started his own business, Southern Iowa Plumbing located in Corydon, Iowa. He started out by himself and after a year and a half, he hired his first employee. He started his business out of the back of his home and remained there for 5 years. In 2018, he built a shop and moved the business out of his home. Today, Southern Iowa Plumbing employs 7 full-time and 1 part-time employees. They offer plumbing, heating, air conditioning, mini-splits, septic system repairs, maintenance and installs, septic pumping, demolition of dilapidated homes, sewage lift station pump repairs and installs, boiler work, sewer camera inspections, sewer jetting and drain cleaning among many other services. “We do everything mechanic except electrical.” Southern Iowa Plumbing provides work for both residential and commercial settings. With 31 years of experience under his belt, John has dealt with a plethora of different situations and to today has conquered them all.

On 2/7/2025 Nicole Muir had this to say:
The service from the owner, John, and his staff was top notch. We woke up to our old hot water heater no longer working and they had it replaced within 24 hours, where other companies said it would take atleast a few days. They were all very polite, quick, and informative…despite some weather conditions that had everyone closing and running behind. We will definitely be calling Southern Iowa Plumbing first from now on.

My mother's sewer was backed up and they came the same day on a federal holiday. They had the line cleared of tree roots quickly. Will definitely use them again.
